Paddle is a winter sport...but there are limits to what the heaters can do to clear the courts! Nevertheless, the Columbus Open was played on Saturday, February 8. Director Denny English (winner of the Men's 90+ with partner Mark Kebe on Friday), reported that in the Men's Open division, the 4 seeds held through the semis, and #1 Ryan Baxter and Ricky Heath topped #2 Rob Bakker and Eric Miller in the finals. Brad Meadors & JR Randall claimed the Consolation title; The Reprieve crown went to Triplett & Allison; McEnery & Ghidotti were Conso Reprieve winners; and Vens & Shaeffer claimed 5th place with their Quarterfinal Reprieve victory.

In a change from the last few years, the Columbus Open did not have to compete with Mother Nature! The weather cooperated and the seeds held up until the finals, where tournament director and #2 seed Denny English paired with David Lowe to upset top-seeded Thaddeus Reed and Rob Bakker and claim the Buckeye Cup title by the score of 7-6, 6-4. Colin Leveque and Eric Miller teamed up to claim the Men's 90+ crown on Friday, defeating top seeded Michael Todd and John White in the finals.

The Columbus Open weekend began with the Men's 90+ and Women's Open tournaments and concluded with the Buckeye Cup - a men's tournament that serves as the Ohio State Championship. Dan Mott and Mike Todd prevailed in the Men's 90s and Nancy Budde and Tracy Glassmeyeer were victorious in the Women's division. Tournament director Denny English paired with Brian Heil to claim bragging rights in the state of Ohio for the next year in a topsy-turvy 7-6, 0-6, 6-0 match with Rob Bakker and Thaddeus Reed.

The Columbus Open made it through some rough weather, but the inaugural Buckeye Cup had to be cancelled. Top seeded Ann Turner and Kathy Allen prevailed over #2 Kristin Ubersax and Ann Wagner in the Women's event. In the Men's 95s, #1 Mike Todd and John White topped unseeded Peter Bullen and Tim Mauter. The Columbus Open and Buckeye Cup will be contested beginning Friday, February 5. The Women's tournament is a Region 4 Presidents Cup Qualifier. A Men's 90+ (combined age) tournament will take place on Friday as well. The Buckeye Cup is a new event for men. The Columbus Open Men's and Women's Region IV Presidents Cup Qualifier tournaments were great successes. The Women's draw was won by top seeds Kathy Allen and Lindy Ward over second seeds Ann Turner and Linda Thompson. The Men's event saw the top two seeds go down in the semifinals, leading to a finals match-up of third and fourth seeds Eberly & Wilson and Bakker & Reed, with Bakker & Reed prevailing.

Despite the rains and winds from mother nature on Saturday, the 34th Annual Cleveland Masters went off without a hitch November 14 - 16, 2008.  On the National Ranking and PCQ Mens side, #1 seed Brian Heil and Denny English of Columbus, OH defeated Brett Englesberg and Jeff McMasters of Pittsburgh, PA.  For the Women's PCQ, the team of Kathy Allen and Lindy Ward of Cincinnati, OH defeated Vicki Nagy and Beverly Dyminski of Pittsford, NY, 6-1, 6-1.  In the Mens 90+ Open, John Schloss and Eric "Who want's to be my partner" Miller from Cleveland, OH were the champs defeating last year's champs, Danny McLaughlin (Cleveland, OH) and Billy Sullivan from Columbus.

DeRose / Lubow Win First Major

Steve DeRose and Jon Lubow made their trip to Chicago worthwhile by bringing home the crown. This is the first major title for the New Jersey duo, who entered the tournament as 9-12 seeds. They defeated several seeded teams on their way to a finals showdown with Denny English and Brian Heil, of Columbus, OH. There were numerous other upsets in the men's draw. Congrats to Steve and Jon!
