Spring was in the air at the new Brook B women's tournament. Hosted by Spring Brook Country Club and Canoe Brook Country Club, the event featured 32 teams of enthusiastic paddlers enjoying a beautiful day of play and competition. Blue Group winners Kim Amirata & Wendy Foley (following their win at the St. Paddles Day bash on Friday)defeated Cynthia Tratnyek & Anita Bobba in the finals. The Green Group was won by Colleen O'Reilly & Denice Donohoe, who defeated Ava Reynolds and Mary King to claim the crown. The Winnable B, known to many as the unofficial B Championships due to the high level of play, was hotly contested on Sunday at Canoe Brook Country Club and area courts. Multi-time champs Junius Clark and Michael Chen met Adrian Buckley and Rick Sahlman in one semifinal, and went down to the soon-to-be-crowned first-time champs. The other semifinal pitted Ari Borinsky (a former champ) and tournament newcomer Drew Sutton against the reliable team of Matt Bibbo and John deGrandpre, with Matt and John coming out on top. Another successful Women's B tournament, another great cause supported. When the application opened for the Canoe Brook Women's B, it didn't take long for this popular event to fill. Within an hour, all spots were taken, with a huge wait list forming. The decision was made to double the size of the draw...and that filled almost immediately as well! The 32 teams were divided into 2 groups to play paddle and support SIDS research .

In support of friend Marjorie Hodson, Pam Randazzo conceived of the Marjorie Matters Platform Tennis Tournament to raise funds for the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. The draw for this weekend's Atlantic Classic National Ranking Tournament has been released. You can view it under Upcoming Events (on the right). Play will begin Saturday morning at Canoe Brook Country Club and area courts, with finals scheduled for Sunday morning at Canoe Brook. Check the draw to see when and where your favorite players are scheduled. Join us for a fun day of paddle - costumes are optional!
Many junior players go off to college and don't find time for paddle. In an effort to "bring them back" a group of pros is offering College 101 paddle events at holiday times. On January 4, Mike Gillespie and Patty Hogan will host a College 101 event at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ. All players (or potential players) 17 and older are invited to attend this fun, free afternoon event. Contact Mike or Patty for more info, or just show up at Canoe Brook between 2:00 and 4:00 that day.

SERVE - Sandy Emergency Relief Volunteer Efforts will take place on Tuesday, November 27 at Canoe Brook Country Club, Short Hills Club and
Centercourt Athletic Club. Team up with Pros from NY, NJ and CT to raise funds for local victims of Hurricane Sandy. Funds will go to the United Way Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts and to Sea Bright Rising, an organization devoted to the relief of the needy and/or displaced by the hurricane.
Generous donors have made it possible for all proceeds to go directly to the charities.

Saturday's 128 teams and beautiful weather was winnowed down to 20 teams and heavy rains and wind. The Main Draw seminfinals have been re-scheduled for Monday, December 27 at 6:00 PM at Canoe Brook Country Club. Backdraw semis and finals will be played at various times.
Summit, NJ The postponed Women's 40+ Nationals was played under sunny skies today. The Championship finals, featuring top-seeded Cynthia Dardis & Amy Shay and second-seeded Bobo Delaney & Tonia Mangan, will take place Friday morning at 9:45 at Canoe Brook Country Club. All backdraw play was completed today. Draws will be updated ASAP!

The New Jersey Men's League Classic was contested on Saturday and Sunday, but winners have not been determined yet. After 5 rounds of play on Saturday, the field was greatly reduced, but Mother Nature and common sense prevailed after the semifinals on Sunday morning. Anthony Cosimano and Steve Haller are vying for their 8th title, and 3rd in a row. They will have to defeat the 2006 champs, Mike Atkinson and Bill Kloss, in order to enter the record books again. The match is scheduled for Tuesday night at Canoe Brook. Consolation and Last Chance winners were determined, with Andy Provost-Mike Claps and Jay Zaslower-Rich Halik coming out on top. In only his second tournament outing, Brett Kraft was successful. He and his mentor, Ron Cummins, paired up to claim the Winnable B title at the Canoe Brook Country Club. They defeated Todd Anderson and Mike Garibaldi in the finals. Tournament Director Kendall reported that he had another full draw - with wait list - and was even able to fill in a Saturday morning dropout. Hall of Fame
At a gathering of family and friends, the Platform Tennis Hall of Fame welcomed two new members today. During a lunch break at the Women's 40+ and 60+ Nationals at Canoe Brook Country Club Winnie Hatch and Sharon Hummers became the 74th and 75th members of this prestigious group. Hall of Famers Bob Brown and Steve Baird delivered induction speeches stressing the qualities that made the two perfect candidates. Following the acceptance speeches by the candidates, there were words of praise from some who know the two well. Included in these tributes was this poem by Marie Minnick.
