Short Hills, NJ
written by: marjorie
The New Jersey Men's Platform Tennis Association (NJMPTA) League Classic is no doubt the largest single draw tournament in the country. It is also the most fun! The 160 team field saw a lot of good play on Saturday, and the tournament will continue for 2 more days. Backdraw semis and finals are scheduled for Sunday morning. The Main Draw semis and finals will be played on Monday beginning at 5:30 PM. Everyone is invited to come to Essex Fells Country Club to enjoy Vinny's cooking (and a beverage) and watch some great play. Lehigh Valley Classic
Lehigh Valley

Allentown, PA
They came from north, south, east and west to play in the Lehigh Valley Classic. Most of the top players participated, although many switched up partnerships for the day. When one of the #2 seeds was a late scratch due to illness, it wasn't hard finding a replacement - the players really enjoy coming to this event, and it is an easy commute for most. Those from Chicago, Virginia, Washington, DC and Massachusetts had longer journeys, but were all willing to make the effort to earn Region 3 Presidents Cup points and to vie for the best prize out there - a stay at tournament director Chip Morrow's Dominican Republic villa. Drew Broderick and Steve DeRose continued their winning ways (3 tournaments - 3 titles). They ousted Jeff Morneau & Johan duRandt in an exciting semifinal and then, in an all-American final, topped Mike Marino & Dane Schmidgall. Backdraw results: Bostrom & Bredberg finished 5th; Levanat & Rhazali won the Conso; Kahler & Grangeiro won the 16 Reprieve and Furman - McGrath claimed Last Chance honors. Short Hills Invitational Tournament
short Hills Men's 95s

Short Hills, NJ
They say that timing is everything...and the Short Hills Invitational Tournament was lucky with the timing. Weekend weather was great, and Monday morning brought another snow storm! With record draws there were many matches to get played...and everyone still got home in time to watch the Super Bowl. Congratulations to double champion Steve DeRose (Men's95+ with Jaime Ferriero - pictured at left - and Men's Ranking with Jon Lubow), Ana Brzova and Viki Stoklasova (Women's Ranking), Junius Clark and Michael Chen (Men's B), and Amanda Dolan and Anne Delaney (Women's B).

Classic Snowstorm
LeagueClassic 2013

Short Hills, NJ
The Men's League Classic - sponsored by the New Jersey Men's Platform Tennis Association - always features 128 teams and a full day of paddle and food and fun! This year, there was the added attraction of an all day snow storm which was strong enough to overcome many of the court heaters. Despite the obstacles, the tournament was played as scheduled, with main draw finals on Monday night. Congrats to Anthony Cosimano & Jeff Hipkins on defending their title, this time over Steve DeRose & Tim McDougald in a 3 set thriller. See the complete main draw and some photos

Chris Gambino and Drew Broderick Take Chicago

Chicago IL

Last Chance!
Last Chance

Morristown, NJ
It is officially over! The paddle season in New Jersey closed with the playing of the Last Chance Invitational at Spring Brook Country Club and area clubs. In its 6th year, the tournament was the biggest and best yet, with the organizers reluctantly expanding to 32 teams to accommodate more players. (Expanding the draw means spreading the teams over more clubs...but all returned to SBCC for afternoon play, cigars, massages...) Although they reached the final again, two-time defending champs Steve DeRose and Scott Giannetti were dethroned by Anthony Cosimano and Robert Krauss. See the: Complete Draw     Photos

Mark Parsons Johan du Randt crowned 2103 National Champions
Parsons duRandt

Franklin Lakes, NJ
Johan du Randt (Weston MA) and Mark Parsons (Norwalk, CT) left no doubt as to who the top team in the country is winning the 2013 National Chanpionship without dropping a set. Semi final against Juan Arraya and Lennart Jonason was decided by 2 tie breakers. New Jersey favorites Steve DeRose and Jon Lubow beat 2012 National Champs Drew Broderick and Chris Gambino in the Semis but even with heavy support from the crowd were unable to overcome Parsons and du Randt

Last Chance!
DeRose and GPro

Morristown, NJ
The Last Chance Invitational, based at Spring Brook Country Club is a true invitational. Invitations are issued and partners approved by the tournament committee. The goal is a fun-filled end-of-season event with a mix of levels. Ideally, no team is so strong or so weak that matches are not competitive. In its fifth year, the tournament ran into less than ideal weather for the first time, but the 24 teams were able to play through morning showers to make it to a gray but mostly dry (weather-wise) afternoon. Beverages, food and friendships were available in abundance. Spectators showed up just to share in the fun! The day was also used to introduce Steve DeRose as the new Racquets Professional at Spring Brook and to say good-bye to Steve and Trish Griggs, who will be moving from NJ in the near future. Steve DeRose and Scott Giannetti repeated as champs this year...does this team need to be split up for next year?     See some photos and the complete draws

It Was Classic
League Classic 2011

Essex Fells , NJ
With a larger than anticipated crowd of spectators, the keg was "kicked" by 8:00 PM and the grill was in use only for hand-warming by 9:00, but the action was just starting to heat up as the finals of the NJ Men's League Classic were beginning. The semifinals saw top-seeded Jon Lubow and Steve DeRose drop the first set and then storm back to defeat Clay Bibbee and Mike Stulac 4-6, 6-2, 6-0. Drew Broderick and Pat Kelly, seeded 4th, overwhelmed #2 seeds Anthony Cosimano and Steve Haller 6-2, 6-0. Read more, see some crowd photos and view the complete results of this 128 team tournament.

Atlantic is Classic

Essex Fells, NJ
The Atlantic Classic moved to a different spot on the calendar, and the fall weather was definitely a benefit for the spectators. The Saturday afternoon tailgate atmosphere was a perfect backdrop for some exciting, athletic play! New partnerships were on display as well. Bobo Delaney and Kerri Delmonico paired to take home the Women's crown with a hard-fought 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Andrea Noyes and Judy Takach. The Men's semifinals provided great Saturday evening entertainment as newly-paired Scott Estes and Nathan LeFevre withstood the test of current Nationals silver medalists Johan duRandt and Matt Porter by the score of 6-1, 7-5. This was followed by Tournament Director Drew Broderick and Chris Gambino topping Steve DeRose and Jon Lubow in an athletic, fast-paced 7-6, 6-2 match. Sunday morning's Men's final saw Broderick and Gambino prevail over Estes and LeFevre 7-6, 6-2.
