Sometimes a blind date turns out better than expected...Fritz Odenbach and Brian Mitchell found that out today in the Men's APTA 60+ National Championships. Mutual friends suggested that the two pair up, and they managed to reach the finals before falling to Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert, upsetting top seeds Ivan Harlow & Ken Persson en route. This is Kaufman's second gold medal of the season, and he will go for #3 tomorrow as Senior Men's competition continues at the Indian Trail Club. [ read more ]

Blown Away by Senior Play
Men's 55 Nationals

Chatham, NJ
High winds threatened everything not securely fastened down - and that definitely included lobs and service tosses! But the Senior Nationals were unfazed by Mother Nature! Saturday morning featured the Men's 55+ finals - won in a long 3-setter by Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert over last year's champs, Mike Sullivan and Scott Pecor. Play also began in Men's 45+ and 65+ and Women's 40+ Nationals. Main draw finals of those 3 events will be contested on Sunday morning at Centercourt Athletic Club. Chatham, NJ
Steve Baird and Scott Estes topped John Stefanik and Peter Redpath by the score of 6-1, 6-4 to claim the Men's 55+ National title, while Flip Goodspeed and Scott Mansager successfully defended their Men's 45+ crown by defeating Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert 6-3, 6-4.

Second-seeded Hank Irvine and Doug Russell added to their impressive list of National titles with their 1-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory over top seeds Jim Bishop and Mike Hanna in the Men's 65+ National Championships currently underway at the Centercourt Athletic Club. The finals of the Men's 55+, featuring Steve Baird and Scott Estes against John Stefanik and Peter Redpath, and Men's 45+, pitting flip Goodspeed and Scott Mansager against Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert, will take place Sunday morning.

Connecticut State Mixed
CT State Mixed

New Canaan, CT
The revived Connecticut State Mixed was a rousing success, despite Mother's Nature's attempt to put a damper on things! Tournament Director Mike Gillespie even managed to make it to the finals if the Open Division before falling to Susan Lovejoy and Jim Kaufman. In the Senior Division, Susan and Gary Squires prevailed to take home the crown.

Mens 50+ 60+ 70+ Sr Nationals

Scarsdale, NY
Neither snow nor rain nor bright sunny skies deterred the veteran players who competed in the Men's 50+, 60+ and 70+ National Championships at the Fox Meadow Tennis Club, although the snow did cause some re-scheduling. Jim Kaufman - Bob Kleinert, Scott Estes - Danny Galves and Bill Childs - Rich Lombard took home the gold medals. Click here for the full story, draws, and photos.
