Sometimes a blind date turns out better than expected...Fritz Odenbach and Brian Mitchell found that out today in the Men's APTA 60+ National Championships. Mutual friends suggested that the two pair up, and they managed to reach the finals before falling to Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert, upsetting top seeds Ivan Harlow & Ken Persson en route. This is Kaufman's second gold medal of the season, and he will go for #3 tomorrow as Senior Men's competition continues at the Indian Trail Club. [ read more ]

Spring was in the air at the new Brook B women's tournament. Hosted by Spring Brook Country Club and Canoe Brook Country Club, the event featured 32 teams of enthusiastic paddlers enjoying a beautiful day of play and competition. Blue Group winners Kim Amirata & Wendy Foley (following their win at the St. Paddles Day bash on Friday)defeated Cynthia Tratnyek & Anita Bobba in the finals. The Green Group was won by Colleen O'Reilly & Denice Donohoe, who defeated Ava Reynolds and Mary King to claim the crown. New Winnable Champs 03-20-2017

The Winnable B, known to many as the unofficial B Championships due to the high level of play, was hotly contested on Sunday at Canoe Brook Country Club and area courts. Multi-time champs Junius Clark and Michael Chen met Adrian Buckley and Rick Sahlman in one semifinal, and went down to the soon-to-be-crowned first-time champs. The other semifinal pitted Ari Borinsky (a former champ) and tournament newcomer Drew Sutton against the reliable team of Matt Bibbo and John deGrandpre, with Matt and John coming out on top. Join other juniors in the celebration of paddle known as the APTA Junior Nationals! This year's tournament will take place on Saturday, March 4. Play will be at various clubs throughout the area. Entry fee includes favors, lunch, tailgate party and loads of fun, as well as prizes for the National Champions. All participants are also invited to return on Sunday for drills and play with some of the best pros in the nation.

Take 136 teams, divide into 5 groups and create two days of fun! The NJWPTL State Tournament was held January 11 & 12, and featured 272 women playing at 5 competitive levels. The Beacon Hill Club Women's B tournament was held on a glorious winter day, with a few twists...A last minute dropout at match time resulted in a last-minute substitute...and then another substitute for later in the morning...but everyone got to play! Congratulations to Colleen O'Reilly and Denice Donohoe, who "mastered" Angie Comiteau & Katie Bugliari in the finals and took home new Master Athletics paddles as prizes. Another successful Women's B tournament, another great cause supported. When the application opened for the Canoe Brook Women's B, it didn't take long for this popular event to fill. Within an hour, all spots were taken, with a huge wait list forming. The decision was made to double the size of the draw...and that filled almost immediately as well! The 32 teams were divided into 2 groups to play paddle and support SIDS research .

The women gathered for another B tournament - this one based at Essex Fells Country club - and a day of fun and friends! By mid-afternoon, Katy Hobbis and Liz Landy had captured the crown, defeating Nancy Leccese and Gina Patterson in the finals. Men's B at Beacon 11-21-2016

Thirty-two teams entered the Beacon Hill Men's B tournament this weekend. At the end of play, experience won out. Todd Smith and Hans Tang topped Dan Urban and Ari Borinsky in a hard-fought final. This was the first tournament ever for Urban, and he showed a talent that will only improve as he plays more. It's not easy doing it all...tournament director, commentator, trouble-shooter and champion...but Drew Broderick managed to pull it off at the Atlantic Classic tournament last weekend. He and Jared Palmer repeated as champs this year, defeating Mikk Irdoja and Dan Regan in an exciting final. Coming back from a set point down in the semifinals, the champs did not drop a set in the event.

The Indian Trail Women's A tournament was held on October 28. Winners were Pattie Cromie and Louise Cash by the score of 6-1, 6-3 over Sue Durfee and Sue Buchanan.

The paddle tournament season at Indian Trail Club began with a Men's B event on Sunday, October 16. A fun day of play saw Alex McDonald and Greg Morgan defeat Mike Fraser and Larry Friedman to claim the crown by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Dennis Cusack and John Holland topped Ben Durfee and Byron Maturo 6-3, 6-3 to claim the Conso title.

Despite dire predictions of rain all day, there was none! Instead there was a day filled with great paddle matches at the War at the Shore. Pam Ruoff and Lucas Green won the tournament. Kerri Delmonico and Michael Montalbano were runners up. Score was 6-3, 6-1. Pam and Lucas were on fire beating Liz Jaffe and Dan Englander in quarters. Then they went on to beat Andres Noyes and Oleg Tioutine 6-2, 6-3. On other side of draw Amy and Chris Shay beat Judy Takach and Bob Winchester in a tough match 6-3, 6-7, 7-6. Results from the 65th Short Hills Invitational prove that sometimes champions have to make comebacks. Ana Brzova and Viki Stoklasova lost the first set to Kerri Delmonico and Lauren Gebbia before coming back to win the title by the score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Not to be outdone, after dropping the first set 6-0, Drew Broderick and Jared Palmer fought back to defeat Juan Arraya and Max LePivert 0-6, 6-2, 6-1. The War at the Shore kicked off the paddle season in New Jersey on September 26 at the Atlantic Club. Although the weather was clear there were gusting winds, which definitely affected play! The draw was small but competitive, with Liz Jaffe and Miguel Cobbs edging Bobo Delaney and Oleg Tioutine by the score of 6-4, 6-4 to claim the title. [ read more ]

Many junior players go off to college and don't find time for paddle. In an effort to "bring them back" a group of pros is offering College 101 paddle events at holiday times. On January 4, Mike Gillespie and Patty Hogan will host a College 101 event at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ. All players (or potential players) 17 and older are invited to attend this fun, free afternoon event. Contact Mike or Patty for more info, or just show up at Canoe Brook between 2:00 and 4:00 that day.

Helen Garrett and Sandy Simmers have to go down in the record books as one of the most successful teams ever in senior platform tennis play. Once again they claimed the gold medals at the Women's 70+ National Championships, held today at the Essex Fells Country Club. Thanks to Carolyn Tierney for "making it happen" - all who have been involved know that it is a giant juggling feat to end up with 8 teams for this event! Silver medalists were Ginny Sniatkowski & Thelma Huber. Anke Cornell & Gail Condon finished in 3rd place, edging Dolores Krzanowski & Birgit Maio in the playoff match.

On a beautiful day for paddle (if not for Parkway travel), 16 teams enjoyed paddle and lunch.. Being on the wait list sometimes works out... Sue Cecere and Marian Cunningham went from the Wait List to the Winner's Circle at the Indian Trail Women's B tournament on Friday. They defeated Kerry Rice and Kathy Foos in the finals 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Consolation winners were Ava Reynolds and Maggie Magaldi; Reprieve winners were Jeanne Kelly and Margaret O'Meara and Last Chance champs were ITC members Jennifer Chang and Jodie Pani.

Indian Trail Club was the site of a Men's B tournament this weekend. The weather was beautiful and the competition was fierce, with a number of 3-setters, including the finals. Steve Bernt and Todd Smith were crowned champs after their 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Jiri Janko and Hans Tang. Consolation winners were John Holland and Kevin Johnston; Reprieve Champs were Gary Chin and Ken Persson and the Last Chance went to locals John Garone and Bruce Gallagher.

Another season is here and several dedicated teaching pros have volunteered their time to get kids pumped for play by offering two hours of drills and thrills and tricks and treats. Hosted by Drew Broderick and the Canoe Brook Country Club, this free event will run from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 26. All junior players - from beginner to advanced levels - who are at least 8 years old are invited to attend. Patty Hogan, Mike Gillespie, Ana Brzova and other local teaching pros will be joining in the fun. If your junior paddle player would like to participate, or if you have questions about the event, please contact Patty Hogan at pattyhogan8@gmail.com. For the second straight week they entered the tournament unseeded, and for the second staright week they claimed the crown! With the loss of only 8 games through 5 rounds of play in the Atlantic Classic, Drew Broderick and Jared Palmer proved themselves to be a team to be feared. Last week they met in the semifinals, and this week in the finals, but Juan Arraya and Lennart Jonason have yet to win a set from the season's hot new team. With many high level teams playing, there was fierce competition throughout the day on Saturday.     Check out the complete draws here.

Another tournament...another title! Ana Brzova and Viki Stoklasova claimed their second title of the season at the inaugural Lake Invitational, held at the Indian Trail Club. Tournament Director Ana turned the former women's portion of the Atlantic Classic into a Women's Only event that ran simultaneously with the men's tournament being held at Essex Fells Country Club. Ana and Viki defeated Cynthia Dardis and Amy Shay by the score of 6-4, 6-2. Other winners: Quarterfinal Reprieve - Kerri Delmonico and Lauren Gebbia; Reprieve - Karin Kochis and Jaclyn Williamson; Consolation - Michaela Babicova and Marina Ruiz de Gauna and Last Chance - Abigail Burke and Patty Cromie. It was another great day of good weather and paddle at the War at the Shore. This mixed tournament is generally considered "opening day" for the platform tennis season in New Jersey. Andrea Noyes and John Milbank emerged victorious in 3 sets over Liz Jaffe and Dan Englander by a score of 7-6, 4-6, 6-1. Other winners were: Consolation - Charlotte Sikora and Jeff Lyon; Quarter Reprieve - Hilary DiFeo and Jerry Prior; and Last Chance - Joanne O'Shaughnessy and Steve Gilmartin.
