Blind Dates & Medals 03-24-2017
Franklin Lakes, NJ
written by: Marjorie
Sometimes a blind date turns out better than expected...Fritz Odenbach and Brian Mitchell found that out today in the Men's APTA 60+ National Championships. Mutual friends suggested that the two pair up, and they managed to reach the finals before falling to Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert, upsetting top seeds Ivan Harlow & Ken Persson en route. This is Kaufman's second gold medal of the season, and he will go for #3 tomorrow as Senior Men's competition continues at the Indian Trail Club. [ read more ]

Senior Camaraderie 03-24-2017
Scarsdale, NY
written by: Marjorie
One of the repeated hallmarks of platform tennis is "camaraderie". This is always on display at the APTA Men's 145 National Championships. Hosted by the "Home of Platform Tennis" (Fox Meadow Tennis Club) once again, and steered by Jo Rogers and Rick Reuter, the event had sixteen teams competing for the coveted medals. Most of the teams playing on Thursday, however, were there for the fun and friendships. The Alph Beane Award, presented annually to a player who exemplifies this spirit of camaraderie, as Alph did so well, was given this year to Bob Brown (pictured).

Women's 70+ Nationals
APTA Jack-o-Lantern

Essex Fells, NJ
Helen Garrett and Sandy Simmers have to go down in the record books as one of the most successful teams ever in senior platform tennis play. Once again they claimed the gold medals at the Women's 70+ National Championships, held today at the Essex Fells Country Club. Thanks to Carolyn Tierney for "making it happen" - all who have been involved know that it is a giant juggling feat to end up with 8 teams for this event! Silver medalists were Ginny Sniatkowski & Thelma Huber. Anke Cornell & Gail Condon finished in 3rd place, edging Dolores Krzanowski & Birgit Maio in the playoff match.

The 1st annual Holiday Classic was an instant hit! Twenty-four teams of women took time out from the season's chores to play a morning of paddle and have lunch. Group winners were Sherry Zabel and Cindy Lewis, Theresa Hellmuth and Gina Patterson and Patrice Shapiro and Jen Nielsen. After morning play at other clubs, the players came to lunch at Short Hills Club, where they mingled with those playing the Women's 50+ National Championships.     See some photos    Women's 50+ draw (Congrats Bobo & Judy!)

National Championships
Scott and Lloyd

Pelham, NY
The final APTA National Championships - Men's 50s, 60s and 70s - were played at the New York Athletic Club March 22-24. Even though new players become eligible each year, making it difficult to hold onto a title, this year the champions were all familiar. In the 60 & Over group, Scott Estes and Lloyd Ucko (pictured) repeated as champs; Mike Gillespie and Ron Erskine retained their 50 & Over title; and 2-time defending champ Mike Hanna paired with Jim Bishop to claim the 70 & Over crown.

Women's 50s

Scarsdale, NY
They began play in the afternoon and finished well into the evening, with the finals of the Women's 50+ National Championships lasting almost 4 hours! In the end, the new partnership of Tonia Mangan and Andrea Noyes defeated two-time defending champs Bobo Delaney and Judy Takach 7-5, 4-6, 7-6. These mixed-up pairs (Tonia & Bobo will pair for Nationals next week, as will Judy and Andrea) know each others' games so well that they we able to anticipate shots and moves that weren't apparent to the spectators. After a long day in the rain, the Feed-in Consolation final - between Marie Adams & Buttons O'Donnell and Debra LaMountain & Kathy Parker - was deferred until a later date. Carrie Rabuse & Carolyn Cutler claimed Quarterfinal Reprieve honors over Janet Faig & Donna Charlton, while Susan Macdonald & Laurie Schelz defeated Margo DeSantis & Blythe Hamer for the Conso Reprieve crown. Thanks to Susan Schwab for making it all happen!     View the complete draw

Shrouded at Sleepy Hollow
Sleepy Hollow

Scarborough, NY
The heavy fog conjured up images of the Headless Horseman, but did not deter the 40 senior men who arrived at Sleepy Hollow Country Club on Thursday morning ready to do battle. The Men's 145+ National Championships began in heavy fog and wrapped up the day in summer-like weather. The 20 pairs entered represented eight states, and featured 8 men over the age of 80! (Combined ages of the teams needed to total 145 or more for this event.) Finals will be played Friday at Fox Meadow Tennis Club and will feature Bob Brown and Doug Barrow against Blair LeRoy and Larry Garinger for the gold medal.
