Sometimes a blind date turns out better than expected...Fritz Odenbach and Brian Mitchell found that out today in the Men's APTA 60+ National Championships. Mutual friends suggested that the two pair up, and they managed to reach the finals before falling to Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert, upsetting top seeds Ivan Harlow & Ken Persson en route. This is Kaufman's second gold medal of the season, and he will go for #3 tomorrow as Senior Men's competition continues at the Indian Trail Club. [ read more ]

It was a perfect day for paddle in Rochester despite what was happening up and down the East Coast! And even though the name was changed from the Shadow Lake Invitational to the Rochester Open, this 33rd edition of the tournament was just as much fun as the rest! Among the more than 60 teams competing in 4 events, there were a record 7 teams from the Pittsburgh area and another 4 from Cleveland! Congratulations to Jeff McMaster & Brett Engelsberg who upheld their #1 seeding in the Men's Open tournament; Jennifer Schneider & Kelly Brown, who came from Buffalo and surprised 3 seeded teams on their way to the Women's Open title; Jack Odenbach & John Newell, locals who claimed the Men's B crown and Katy Hanrahan & Lynn Diefendorf, top-seeded local players who won the Women's B tournament. Mixed Rules

PIMPT finalists

The Princeton Invitational Mixed Platform Tournament drew players from New York, Pennsylvania, Virginia and New Jersey, with a large number of the teams having a family connection. Teams from Rochester and West Chester prevailed, with the mother-son duo Laurie and David Hissey outlasting husband-wife Sandra and Fritz Odenbach in the final by the score of 6-3, 7-6. Other winners were:  Quarter Reprieve - Newhall & Newhall (husband-wife) over McDougald & McDougald (brother-sister); Consolation - Rabuse & Montalbano (mother-son) over Marchese & Marchese (husband-wife); 2nd Conso - O'Conner & O'Conner (husband-wife) over Garrett & Garrett (mother-son) ; and Last Chance - Finnegan & McGlone (fiances) over Kennedy & Kennedy (husband-wife). For the first time, The Canadian Open took a charitable slant in honour of those paddlers, past and present, who face the realities of cancer every day. Paul Stulac and Scott McFaden claimed the Joe Stulac Memorial trophy and Sandra Odenbach and Suzanne Lanthier won the women's title.  John (Prince William) Newell and Andrew Corneil emerged as "B" champs.   Read more

The Men's 50+ National Championships concluded at Fox Meadow Tennis Club this morning. Scott Bondurant and Bill Fiedler prevailed over Fritz Odenbach and Rusty Wright by the score of 7-6, 6-1.

The headline reads: "Father & Daughter Capture Toronto Open Titles/All Canadian Team Keeps Mixed Title North of the Border". This was to announce the results of the recent Toronto Open and Mixed Canadian Platform Tennis tournaments. Pictured are the winners and finalists of the Women's Open: Rita Kladstrup & Mandy Odenbach, winners; Anna Lis & Steph Russell, finalists. The Men's title was claimed by Fritz Odenbach & Huy Nguyen, with Paul Stulac & Andrew Daw coming in second. The Mixed was won by Suzanne Lanthier & Paul Stulac over Sara Lanthier & Miguel Cobbs.

Shadow Lake Invitational - Men

The Shadow Lake Invitational saw Drew Broderick and Anton Mavrin almost measure up to Mike Stulac and Steve DeRose, but even standing on tiptoe was not quite enough. DeRose - Stulac prevailed 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 in this National Ranking Tournament and Region 4 PCQ. The Men's "B" tournament was won by Brett Caroselli and Joe Ryan over Rich Anderson and Bill Wadsworth, 6-0, 7-6. Tournament Director Fritz Odenbach remarked that it "was a great weekend". Shadow Lake Invitational

Offering four separate tournaments was not enough for Fritz Odenbach and company - so they are opening the Shadow Lake Invitational with a Friday night Clinic and Exhibition sponsored by the APTA. The fun begins at 5:00 PM on Friday, October 22nd with the free clinic, which is open to all. An exhibition featuring some top players will start at 7:00 PM. Saturday will feature Men's A (National & Regional Ranking), Women's A (Regional Ranking), Men's B and Women's B (for those looking for some fun competition) tournament play.     Click for more information, last year's results and to sign up.

The Canadian Open is always a fun way to end the season for many top players, and this year was no exception! The Women's tournament was won by Sandra Odenbach and Nathalie Lemieux. In the Men's tournament, Ray Crosta and Steve DeRose teamed up to defeat Mike Stulac and tournament director Andrew Daw in one semifinal by the score of 7-6, 6-4. The other semifinal saw two-time defending champs Fritz Odenbach and Rusty Wright go down to defeat against Paul Stulac and Scott McFaden 6-2, 7-6. Crosta & DeRose emerged victorious in the final by the score of 6-4, 6-3. See some photos.


Men's 45+, 55+ and 65+ Nationals

The Men's 45+, 55+ and 65+ Nationals ended with compelling matches in the finals of the 45+ and 55+ divisions. The APTA Men's 55+ National Champions are Fritz Odenbach and Martin Sturgess (pictured with Tournament Director Scott Estes), who defeated Jean Kempner and Mike Sullivan by a score of 6-1, 1-6, 6-2. The 45+ champs are Rob Pierce and Leo Power, who overcame the loss of a first set tiebreaker to defeat Ed Gartner and John Shehadi 6-7, 6-4, 6-4. The finalists in the 3 events contested this weekend represented teams from regions 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5!
