One of the repeated hallmarks of platform tennis is "camaraderie". This is always on display at the APTA Men's 145 National Championships. Hosted by the "Home of Platform Tennis" (Fox Meadow Tennis Club) once again, and steered by Jo Rogers and Rick Reuter, the event had sixteen teams competing for the coveted medals. Most of the teams playing on Thursday, however, were there for the fun and friendships. The Alph Beane Award, presented annually to a player who exemplifies this spirit of camaraderie, as Alph did so well, was given this year to Bob Brown (pictured).

It rained and it rained and it rained...it was only 3 days, not 40, but we think that the fact that the film "Noah" was opening this weekend must have had something to do with the weather for the Mixed Masters held at Saucon Valley Country Club! On Friday, the 60+ Mixed Nationals featured 8 teams and a lot of fun while dodging raindrops. Gold medalists Diane Straus Tucker & Scott Estes already have an impressive array of medals, and added another at the expense of Connie Jones & Ken Persson. Saturday was the day for the 50+ Mixed Nationals, and as the weather got sloppier the play got more intense. In the end, sister-brother duo Laurie Hissey & Tim McAvoy repeated as champs, defeating Bobo Delaney & Mike Gillespie. Sunday's Husband-Wife 50+ tournament featured 16 teams who travelled from as far as Massachusetts and Ohio to compete for the gold. For the third day in a row we had #1 vs #2 in the finals, with Heather & Vince Prop defeating Cynthia & Ken Dardis for the crown.
The final APTA National Championships - Men's 50s, 60s and 70s - were played at the New York Athletic Club March 22-24. Even though new players become eligible each year, making it difficult to hold onto a title, this year the champions were all familiar. In the 60 & Over group, Scott Estes and Lloyd Ucko (pictured) repeated as champs; Mike Gillespie and Ron Erskine retained their 50 & Over title; and 2-time defending champ Mike Hanna paired with Jim Bishop to claim the 70 & Over crown.
