Repeat Champs at AC 10-30-2017

Martin Bostrom and Sebastian Bredberg reached their first NRT final this weekend and definitely proved that they belonged there. They were narrowly edged out by repeat champs Drew Broderick and Jared Palmer on a rainy day by a score of 6-4, 1-6, 7-6 (7). See the draw here . Spring was in the air at the new Brook B women's tournament. Hosted by Spring Brook Country Club and Canoe Brook Country Club, the event featured 32 teams of enthusiastic paddlers enjoying a beautiful day of play and competition. Blue Group winners Kim Amirata & Wendy Foley (following their win at the St. Paddles Day bash on Friday)defeated Cynthia Tratnyek & Anita Bobba in the finals. The Green Group was won by Colleen O'Reilly & Denice Donohoe, who defeated Ava Reynolds and Mary King to claim the crown. The Winnable B, known to many as the unofficial B Championships due to the high level of play, was hotly contested on Sunday at Canoe Brook Country Club and area courts. Multi-time champs Junius Clark and Michael Chen met Adrian Buckley and Rick Sahlman in one semifinal, and went down to the soon-to-be-crowned first-time champs. The other semifinal pitted Ari Borinsky (a former champ) and tournament newcomer Drew Sutton against the reliable team of Matt Bibbo and John deGrandpre, with Matt and John coming out on top. Another successful Women's B tournament, another great cause supported. When the application opened for the Canoe Brook Women's B, it didn't take long for this popular event to fill. Within an hour, all spots were taken, with a huge wait list forming. The decision was made to double the size of the draw...and that filled almost immediately as well! The 32 teams were divided into 2 groups to play paddle and support SIDS research . Green Group winners were Brenda Colvin and Kathy Sprague. White Group champs were Sharon Murphy and Susanne Bernt. Many junior players go off to college and don't find time for paddle. In an effort to "bring them back" a group of pros is offering College 101 paddle events at holiday times. On January 4, Mike Gillespie and Patty Hogan will host a College 101 event at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ. All players (or potential players) 17 and older are invited to attend this fun, free afternoon event. Contact Mike or Patty for more info, or just show up at Canoe Brook between 2:00 and 4:00 that day.

Kids Kickoff the Paddle Season

Another season is here and several dedicated teaching pros have volunteered their time to get kids pumped for play by offering two hours of drills and thrills and tricks and treats. Hosted by Drew Broderick and the Canoe Brook Country Club, this free event will run from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 26. All junior players - from beginner to advanced levels - who are at least 8 years old are invited to attend. Patty Hogan, Mike Gillespie, Ana Brzova and other local teaching pros will be joining in the fun. If your junior paddle player would like to participate, or if you have questions about the event, please contact Patty Hogan at pattyhogan8@gmail.com. You plan an event to raise funds to help those impacted by a monster storm, and she decides to get involved with snow and ice - the only day that week that the weather isn't perfect! With 84 players, 22 pros and a host of volunteers and donors, 1st SERVE - Sandy Emergency Relief Volunteer Efforts took place on Tuesday, November 27 at Canoe Brook Country Club, Short Hills Club and Centercourt Athletic Club with beautiful fluffy snow falling and the roads and courts getting slushy. SERVE - Sandy Emergency Relief Volunteer Efforts will take place on Tuesday, November 27 at Canoe Brook Country Club, Short Hills Club and Centercourt Athletic Club. Team up with Pros from NY, NJ and CT to raise funds for local victims of Hurricane Sandy. Funds will go to the United Way Hurricane Sandy Relief Efforts and to Sea Bright Rising, an organization devoted to the relief of the needy and/or displaced by the hurricane. Generous donors have made it possible for all proceeds to go directly to the charities.

The snow gave way to a beautiful winter day and the Indian Trail Women's B tournament was played as scheduled. Fifteen teams from throughout New Jersey and a team from Connecticut gathered for a great day of paddle and fun at the Indian Trail Club. Many competitive matches caused a marathon day of paddle! The predictions of rain were not fulfilled - the promises of a fun day of paddle were! Sixteen teams participated in the first annual Canoe Brook Women's B tournament. After a morning full of play and a delicious lunch, champions were crowned. In the Main Draw, Charlotte Bevelsborg & Carolyn Cutler defeated Maylen Pierce & Patrice Shapiro. Marylyn McLaughlin & Kelley Gardner claimed the Consolation title; Janet Calvert & Lynn Ivans were Last Chance champs and Rebecca Michalopouolos & Regina Daly were victorious in the Reprieve. The Championship finals, featuring top-seeded Cynthia Dardis & Amy Shay and second-seeded Bobo Delaney & Tonia Mangan, will take place Friday morning at 9:45 at Canoe Brook Country Club.
