Once again they gathered, old faces and new, for the “official” end of the paddle season in New Jersey – the Last Chance Invitational hosted by Spring Brook Country Club. The finals saw Ivan Harlow and Mike Stulac down Matt Bibbo and Drew Broderick in a tightly contested 7-6, 7-5 battle. This 32-team event (draw here) has been spearheaded by the same group of guys since its inception more than a dozen years ago. It has always featured great friends, great favors, great food and great play. This year, sadly, we also said goodbye to one of the great supporters of the event and a true paddl [ read more ]

Last Chance!

It is officially over! The paddle season in New Jersey closed with the playing of the Last Chance Invitational at Spring Brook Country Club and area clubs. In its 6th year, the tournament was the biggest and best yet, with the organizers reluctantly expanding to 32 teams to accommodate more players. (Expanding the draw means spreading the teams over more clubs...but all returned to SBCC for afternoon play, cigars, massages...) Although they reached the final again, two-time defending champs Steve DeRose and Scott Giannetti were dethroned by Anthony Cosimano and Robert Krauss. See the: Complete DrawPhotos

Morristown, NJ The Last Chance Invitational, based at Spring Brook Country Club is a true invitational. Invitations are issued and partners approved by the tournament committee. The goal is a fun-filled end-of-season event with a mix of levels. Ideally, no team is so strong or so weak that matches are not competitive. In its fifth year, the tournament ran into less than ideal weather for the first time, but the 24 teams were able to play through morning showers to make it to a gray but mostly dry (weather-wise) afternoon. Beverages, food and friendships were available in abundance. Spectators showed up just to share in the fun! The day was also used to introduce Steve DeRose as the new Racquets Professional at Spring Brook and to say good-bye to Steve and Trish Griggs, who will be moving from NJ in the near future. Steve DeRose and Scott Giannetti repeated as champs this year...does this team need to be split up for next year? See some photos and the complete draws

Summer is coming...and there was one last chance...to play in an organized platform tennis tournament during the 2010-2011 season. That tournament, The Last Chance, took place at Spring Brook Country Club on April 2nd. Featuring quality players, quality people, quality (and quantity) food, fire pit, massage therapist, cigars and music...All who were invited to play were winners! The tournament champs were Steve DeRose and Scott Giannetti, who defeated Drew Broderick and Steve Griggs in the finals. Best tournament of the year? Maybe...

The 4th annual "Last Chance" Invitational was held April 10th at the Spring Brook Country Club. What makes the event so special besides it being the last chance of the season to play paddle in balmy weather is the quality of the field each year. This year players like Anthony Cosimano and Steve DeRose were the headliners. But the list goes on... national champ Greg Moore, Mike Palmer, Kendall Osborne, Ivan Harlow, Mike Atkinson and new senior champ Steve Griggs. Great weather, great food and fun. Hosts Greg Robertson and Hank Whiting, along with club pro Jim McCready, had it easy with the quality and sportsmanship everyone brought to the event.
