Spring at the Brook 03-22-2017

Spring was in the air at the new Brook B women's tournament. Hosted by Spring Brook Country Club and Canoe Brook Country Club, the event featured 32 teams of enthusiastic paddlers enjoying a beautiful day of play and competition. Blue Group winners Kim Amirata & Wendy Foley (following their win at the St. Paddles Day bash on Friday)defeated Cynthia Tratnyek & Anita Bobba in the finals. The Green Group was won by Colleen O'Reilly & Denice Donohoe, who defeated Ava Reynolds and Mary King to claim the crown. Junior paddlers are gearing up for their end-of-season championships. On Sunday teams in all age groups participated in the New Jersey Junior Open. Congratulations to the Champions, as well as all who participated in a great afternoon of play. See the full results and some photos here.

Other upcoming junior events are the Beacon Hill Junior Open on January 26 and the Connecticut Junior Open on February 3.

At the official season ending tournament in Canada, Americans teamed with Canadians to take Men's, Men’s B and Women’s titles. For the first time, The Canadian Open took a charitable slant in honour of those paddlers, past and present, who face the realities of cancer every day. Paul Stulac and Scott McFaden claimed the Joe Stulac Memorial trophy and Sandra Odenbach and Suzanne Lanthier won the women's title.  John (Prince William) Newell and Andrew Corneil emerged as "B" champs.   Read more

The APTA Junior Tour is ready to kick off the season in Region I with the Patterson Junior Open on Sunday, November 15. Scott Slobin promises another strong field of junior paddlers from the area, with play offered in 10 & Under, 12 & Under, 14 & Under and 18 & Under divisions. Sign up is online only.

Tim Heath has been spending a little less time on the paddle courts lately but he has been busy with court related matters. This past weekend at the Eastern Tennis Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting in White Plains, NY, Tim was appointed the new volunteer president of the USTA Eastern section. It was also simultaneously announced that Tim is going to be the new publisher of Tennis Week magazine. Tim is looking forward to conveying some of his court observations and wit through the pages of Tennis Week. Tim encourages all Region One paddlers to renew their USTA memberships so they can receive a free subscription to Tennis Week.

Teams from around Toronto as well as long distance paddlers from New York City, Rochester, Chicago, Buffalo and the Niagara region participated in an awesome Canadian Open tournament.  The Men's title was well-earned, as Fritz Odenbach and Rusty Wright (pictured) had to defeat two past championship teams in Paul Stulac/Scott McFaden (Semi Final, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4) and Mike Stulac/Tim Main (Finals, 6-4, 7-5) to capture the Joe Stulac Memorial Trophy.  On the Women's side, Anna Lis & Stephanie Booth repeated as champs, defeating Daniela Pino-Wright & Joan Stulac in the finals.
