Many junior players go off to college and don't find time for paddle. In an effort to "bring them back" a group of pros is offering College 101 paddle events at holiday times. On January 4, Mike Gillespie and Patty Hogan will host a College 101 event at Canoe Brook Country Club in Summit, NJ. All players (or potential players) 17 and older are invited to attend this fun, free afternoon event. Contact Mike or Patty for more info, or just show up at Canoe Brook between 2:00 and 4:00 that day.
Another season is here and several dedicated teaching pros have volunteered their time to get kids pumped for play by offering two hours of drills and thrills and tricks and treats. Hosted by Drew Broderick and the Canoe Brook Country Club, this free event will run from 2:00 - 4:00 pm on Sunday, October 26. All junior players - from beginner to advanced levels - who are at least 8 years old are invited to attend. Patty Hogan, Mike Gillespie, Ana Brzova and other local teaching pros will be joining in the fun. If your junior paddle player would like to participate, or if you have questions about the event, please contact Patty Hogan at email@example.com. (Note: Plan to be there by 1:45 PM, and no jeans, please!)
It rained and it rained and it rained...it was only 3 days, not 40, but we think that the fact that the film "Noah" was opening this weekend must have had something to do with the weather for the Mixed Masters held at Saucon Valley Country Club! On Friday, the 60+ Mixed Nationals featured 8 teams and a lot of fun while dodging raindrops. Gold medalists Diane Straus Tucker & Scott Estes already have an impressive array of medals, and added another at the expense of Connie Jones & Ken Persson. Saturday was the day for the 50+ Mixed Nationals, and as the weather got sloppier the play got more intense. In the end, sister-brother duo Laurie Hissey & Tim McAvoy repeated as champs, defeating Bobo Delaney & Mike Gillespie. Sunday's Husband-Wife 50+ tournament featured 16 teams who travelled from as far as Massachusetts and Ohio to compete for the gold. For the third day in a row we had #1 vs #2 in the finals, with Heather & Vince Prop defeating Cynthia & Ken Dardis for the crown.
The final APTA National Championships - Men's 50s, 60s and 70s - were played at the New York Athletic Club March 22-24. Even though new players become eligible each year, making it difficult to hold onto a title, this year the champions were all familiar. In the 60 & Over group, Scott Estes and Lloyd Ucko (pictured) repeated as champs; Mike Gillespie and Ron Erskine retained their 50 & Over title; and 2-time defending champ Mike Hanna paired with Jim Bishop to claim the 70 & Over crown.

The final APTA Mixed Champions for the season were crowned yesterday at Saucon Valley Country Club, with the sister-brother duo of Laurie Hissey & Tim McAvoy defeating high school tennis teammates Andrea Noyes & Mike Gillespie in "perfect paddle weather" - wet, snowy conditions - by the score of 6-4, 6-2 to claim the 50+ Mixed gold medals. Diane Tucker & Rusty Wright claimed 3rd place over Sue & Pete Pijawka and Sally & Mark Allen claimed 5th over Abigail Burke and Paul Wishnoff, a team they had lost to in the first round! Iron Matt Mixed Paddle
Franklin Lakes, NJ
The platform tennis community loves a good cause...and what could be a better cause than "helping children win the race against brain tumors"? The Iron Matt Mixed Paddle tournament (Iron Maddle) was back for a second year with a full draw, perfect weather, good friends, good paddle, good music, great cause! At the close of day, Ana Brzova and Anthony Cosimano prevailed over Kelly Van Calcar and Mike Gillespie to claim the crown. The winner was the Matthew Larson Foundation and all of the children and families who will be affected by their generosity. See some photos
Senior Men's Nationals
The weather cooperated for a change and the Senior Men's APTA Nationals went off without a hitch! Beginning with Men's 65+ play on Friday, the tournament continued in beautiful winter weather on Saturday.
The 65+ final saw Steve Griggs and Mike O'Donnell repeat as champs, ousting tournament director Scott Estes and Danny Galves, visiting from Georgia. Finals of both the Men's 45+ and 55+ are scheduled for Sunday at 10:00 AM at Centercourt Club in Chatham. The 45s will feature defending gold medalists Rob Pierce and Leo Power versus Bob Conklin and Mike Gillespie. The 55s pit the #3 and #4 seeds Scott Pecor & Mike Sullivan and Tim Mangan & John McMillin against each other. View the complete draws here.
