Paddles UP!
Gearing up for the platform tennis season, Bob Considine and Mike Cochran of Viking Academy gave a three-hour platform tennis clinic at Manursing Island Club last week. Paddle tennis, as it is colloquially called, has enjoyed a recent surge in popularity. Westchester paddle tennis will be at an all time high with over 50 teams playing in multiple leagues throughout the county, according to Considine.Mike Cochrane is currently ranked fifth in the nation.
Rye, which has a rich platform tennis history, has five clubs fielding teams in both men's and women's leagues. Pictured with the pros: Peter Urbanczyk, Bill Gedale, Doug Stern, Monte Stubbs, Cole Mackay, Mark Rice, Sam Baker and Jim Gallagher, members of the Manursing Men's Team.
