Rochester Democrat

Rochester, NY
Working in the family quarry business, Fritz Odenbach and his brothers were used to getting their hands dirty. But when the work was done, it was time to play. In the late 1970s, their dad, John M. Odenbach, a playful soul, got the ball rolling on construction of what would become Shadow Lake Golf and Racquet Club in Penfield, one the area's premier public facilities. It was there that the Odenbach clan worked hard and played harder.  full story

In a moving and entertaining ceremony, three men were inducted into the APTA Hall of Fame at the Fox Meadow Tennis Club.  At the conclusion of Saturday play during the Senior Men’s Championships Herb FitzGibbon, John Mangan and Doug Russell received the highest honor in platform tennis. HOF Committee Chair and Master of Ceremonies Bob Brown began with a brief history of the Hall of Fame and then proceeded to introduce each of the presenters and inductees.  Steve Baird presented Doug Russell, Bob Kingsbury presented John Mangan and Hank Irvine presented Herb FitzGibbon.  As each one reminisced he seemed to outdo those who came before with amusing anecdotes.

Scarsdale NY
Down 6-0, 5-2 Scott Estes and Dan Galves saved a match point and rallied to win two tiebreakers to claim the Men’s 60+ crown over Hank Irvine and Doug Russell.  It was a repeat of last year’s final pairing in which Irvine-Russell were victorious.

Short Hills Invitational 95+

Short Hills , NJ
The Short Hills Invitational Tournament added a Men’s 95+ event this year, and all involved consider it a success.  Five of the 16 teams were father-son combos – Browne, Cochrane, Crosta, Estes and Ruppert – who are now promoting the idea of a Father-Son tournament.  The snow and sleet that was predicted for Friday morning did not arrive until late afternoon, allowing most matches to be played under ideal circumstances.  Most of the crowd stayed on the porch for the final, however, as the weather turned very wet and cold.  Andy Sorrentino and John Stefanik defeated both seeded teams – Scott and Scott Estes in the semifinals and Gary and Mike Cochrane in the finals – to take home the crown.  photos and results

I will now look forward to cold days to get out on the paddle courts when outdoor tennis is not an option." full story from chapelhillnews.com
