ORLANDO, Fla. (Dec. 11, 2020) — The USTA released the following statement regarding possible COVID-19 transmission on tennis balls:

Question: Is there any research which identified the potential for COVID-19 to be transmitted on tennis balls?

Answer: A recent study determined that the surface of sports balls, notably football, golf, cricket, and tennis balls, are unlikely to harbor SARS-CoV-2 in a manner that is compatible with risk of developing COVID-19 from handling the ball during normal play. It was hot hot hot! But no one complained and everyone played well. Mike Stulac and Cindy Prendergast beat Judy Takach and Rick Sahlman in one semi. Amy and Chris Shay beat Andrea Noyes and Greg Eger in the other semi. Cindy and Mike eked out a win against Amy and her husband 6-7, 7-6, 6-1. It was a great match with long points and was fun to watch.

The 2019 Big Paddle was held on February 16th. The annual event was hosted at Hartford Golf Club by Gil Keegan, H.G.C. captain/player and Courtia Worth, the Club's Racquet Professional. This four-club competition features the best players from central Massachusetts, central and eastern Connecticut, Rhode Island, and beyond. The Montclair Golf Club hosted the inaugural Montclair Women's B tournament on Friday, October 26 to rave reviews. The 16 team field competed in beautiful paddle weather at MGC and Essex Fells Country Club. The inaugural Black Widow Invitational, weathered out a few months ago, took place on Saturday, September 15 at Morristown Field Club. The 16 teams represented a nice mix of levels, ages and home clubs. Kathryn Volker and Glen Sundin oversaw the maiden voyage of a tournament that is sure to be a staple for years. Once again they gathered, old faces and new, for the “official” end of the paddle season in New Jersey – the Last Chance Invitational hosted by Spring Brook Country Club. The finals saw Ivan Harlow and Mike Stulac down Matt Bibbo and Drew Broderick in a tightly contested 7-6, 7-5 battle. With 144 teams scheduled for play, morning snow and school opening delays provided a challenge for the New Jersey Women's Platform Tennis League State Tournament. But play went on! The opening B event for New Jersey men's paddle, the Indian Trail Club Men's B, began under gray skies and finished in the sun. Gary Chin and Bob Engdahl came out on top, defeating Ralph Valvano and Michael Blasius in the finals by a score of 6-3, 7-6. Sometimes a blind date turns out better than expected...Fritz Odenbach and Brian Mitchell found that out today in the Men's APTA 60+ National Championships. Mutual friends suggested that the two pair up, and they managed to reach the finals before falling to Jim Kaufman and Bob Kleinert, upsetting top seeds Ivan Harlow & Ken Persson en route. One of the repeated hallmarks of platform tennis is "camaraderie". This is always on display at the APTA Men's 145 National Championships. Hosted by the "Home of Platform Tennis" (Fox Meadow Tennis Club) once again, and steered by Jo Rogers and Rick Reuter, the event had sixteen teams competing for the coveted medals. Most of the teams playing on Thursday, however, were there for the fun and friendships. The Alph Beane Award, presented annually to a player who exemplifies this spirit of camaraderie, as Alph did so well, was given this year to Bob Brown (pictured).

Thirty-two teams entered the Beacon Hill Men's B tournament this weekend. At the end of play, experience won out. Todd Smith and Hans Tang topped Dan Urban and Ari Borinsky in a hard-fought final. This was the first tournament ever for Urban, and he showed a talent that will only improve as he plays more. It's not easy doing it all...tournament director, commentator, trouble-shooter and champion...but Drew Broderick managed to pull it off at the Atlantic Classic tournament last weekend. He and Jared Palmer repeated as champs this year, defeating Mikk Irdoja and Dan Regan in an exciting final. Coming back from a set point down in the semifinals, the champs did not drop a set in the event.

A fun day of play saw Alex McDonald and Greg Morgan defeat Mike Fraser and Larry Friedman to claim the crown by a score of 6-3, 6-2. Dennis Cusack and John Holland topped Ben Durfee and Byron Maturo 6-3, 6-3 to claim the Conso title.

Despite dire predictions of rain all day, there was none! Instead there was a day filled with great paddle matches at the War at the Shore. Pam Ruoff and Lucas Green won the tournament. Kerri Delmonico and Michael Montalbano were runners up. Score was 6-3, 6-1. Pam and Lucas were on fire beating Liz Jaffe and Dan Englander in quarters. The day was busy but well coordinated by the tournament directors Asa Nilsson and Kate Morneau as well as by two paddle enthusiasts’ Tom Kietzman and Per Nilsson. Helen Garrett and Sandy Simmers have to go down in the record books as one of the most successful teams ever in senior platform tennis play. Once again they claimed the gold medals at the Women's 70+ National Championships, held today at the Essex Fells Country Club. Thanks to Carolyn Tierney for "making it happen" - all who have been involved know that it is a giant juggling feat to end up with 8 teams for this event! Silver medalists were Ginny Sniatkowski & Thelma Huber. Anke Cornell & Gail Condon finished in 3rd place, edging Dolores Krzanowski & Birgit Maio in the playoff match.

Sue Cecere and Marian Cunningham went from the Wait List to the Winner's Circle at the Indian Trail Women's B tournament on Friday. They defeated Kerry Rice and Kathy Foos in the finals 6-2, 5-7, 6-1. Consolation winners were Ava Reynolds and Maggie Magaldi; Reprieve winners were Jeanne Kelly and Margaret O'Meara and Last Chance champs were ITC members Jennifer Chang and Jodie Pani.

Indian Trail Club was the site of a Men's B tournament this weekend. The weather was beautiful and the competition was fierce, with a number of 3-setters, including the finals. Steve Bernt and Todd Smith were crowned champs after their 6-4, 3-6, 7-5 victory over Jiri Janko and Hans Tang. Consolation winners were John Holland and Kevin Johnston; Reprieve Champs were Gary Chin and Ken Persson and the Last Chance went to locals John Garone and Bruce Gallagher.
